People go hiking for many reasons. Some for exercise, others for the pure joy of it. I doubt anyone else goes in for the same reason as I. I go in to study werewolves and vampires. Most of the myths about them aren’t true. Werewolves don’t turn on a full moon, they can choose when they turn. Vampires can come out in daylight and aren’t crazy blood-suckers, most of them have control over themselves. Same goes for werewolves. They rarely ever do, except on one night. The night of the blood moon. The blood moon is another term for a lunar eclipse; when the sun shines behind a full moon. It happens sometimes once every year. Werewolves and vampires can’t control themselves on that night. They attack anyone or anything they can find. My friend Ryder is a werewolf.I don’t really know how him and I are friends. Even though I study the werewolves and vampires I don’t like them. They still hurt people and they’re unnatural. I’m bracing for myself for tonight. There will be a blood moon tonight. I want to discover why that one night makes the werewolves and vampires lose control. I also want to know why the vampires lose control before werewolves do. The werewolves attack humans at night but the vampires lose it during the day and also at night. I shouldn’t even be in the forest now, the uncontrolled vampires were roaming now but I didn’t care. I came prepared. I always have my silver necklace with me. It’s effective with both vampires and werewolves. I hope I don’t have to use it, though. It won’t hold them off for long. I spot a log and I sit down on it. I’ve been walking for a few hours and my feet were starting to hurt. I unhooked my silver necklace from my neck and held it in my hand. It was getting late and the werewolves would be turning soon. Suddenly I heard rustling close to me. I gripped the necklace tightly but then slowly softened my grip.
“Ha-ha very funny, Ryder. Come out.” I called out.
“I’m serious,Ryder, come out now.”
There was still no reply. I stood up slowly but then a figure jumped out and hurled toward me with alarming speed. A vampire. I swing my necklace outward and it connected with his face. He cried out as the silver burned a red gash on his cheek but it didn’t slow him down. I kept swinging the necklace but it didn't seem to be affecting him as much as it’s supposed to. I backed up until my back was flat against a tree. I swung the necklace again but the vampire simply caught it and easily ripped it out of my hand. He threw it to the ground a few feet away. Snarling he advanced on me, I closed my eyes. Next thing I know something else jumps from the forest and tackles the vampire to the ground. A werewolf. The vampire rolls away baring it’s fangs at the werewolf but runs away. The werewolf transforms back to human. It’s Ryder.
“Do you have a death wish, Farin?” He asks me furiously.
“Hello to you too.” His dark eyes were glaring at me.
“This is the fourth time I had to save you from a vampire! Why can’t you listen to me and lock yourself in your house on a blood moon?”
“You know why. I want to figure out the reason why you all lose control on this specific night.”
“I know but can’t you do that when you’re at home?”
“No.” I crossed my arms. “And I am not leaving. I need to figure it out.”
“You are leaving. I will make sure you stay out of the forest tonight even if I have to lock you in your basement.”
“What a gentleman you are.”
“It’s better than letting you stay out here and get killed.”
“I have my necklace, I’m fine.”
“Yes, like it was doing you much good before.” He picked up the necklace using his jacket sleeve and handed it back to me.
“It was odd with that vampire. The silver barely had an effect on him.”
“I know, I’ve been seeing that lately. Items that should have an effect on vampires haven’t been effecting them at all. The vampire leader just signed a peace treaty with the werewolves but I don’t think he even knew what he was signing. He despises us, he’ll probably still try to kill us.”
“I don’t see why he would sign a peace treaty just to break it.” All the vampire and werewolf politics always confused me.
“He’s horrible. He’ll do it just to make us think that we can trust him but he’ll end up stabbing the werewolves in the back with a rather sharp silver knife. Just mark my word, it will happen sooner or later.”
“Maybe he really does want peace between you and the vampires.”
Ryder just snorted.
“Your Alpha obviously thinks so.” I told him hoping we can end this conversation soon.
“My Alpha is old and ill. He isn’t in his right mind. Hopefully the next Alpha knows better.”
Ryder looked up and turned nervous. The full moon was already up, it was only a matter of minutes before it turned into a blood moon.
“Farin, you should go.” He told me.
“No, I want to see you turn.” I said defiantly.
He doubled over gasping. He was starting to turn now.
“Farin. Go!” He growled. The look he gave me startled me a bit. It didn’t look human. Without a word I began to run back to my house. I didn’t have a flashlight and I kept stumbling over tree roots sticking up from the ground. I fell one time and when I did I heard a howl from not too far behind me. I stood up quickly and started to run again. I ran until I could no longer catch my breath. I put my hand up to my neck to feel reassured be my necklace but it wasn’t there.
“Crap.” I whispered. It was my mother's, I can’t lose it. I started walking back from where I came, squinting in the darkness trying to find the long silver chain. The bright red of the blood moon helped somewhat. In a matter of minutes I found the chain. I bent down to pick it up and when I stood up a werewolf was standing ten feet away from me. I recognized it quickly as Ryder. I saw him as a wolf plenty of times to recognize him. He bared his fangs at me and growled.
“Ryder, it’s me. It’s Farin.” I said calmly but I knew it wouldn’t work. He wasn’t in control of his body at all. He began to advance slowly on me. I took the necklace off my neck and held it out.
“I don’t want to do this, Ryder. I really don’t. Please don’t make me.”
He growled and jumped at me. I swung the necklace out and hit him in the side but not before he sunk his teeth into my arm. I cried out and he did the same. He ran away and I was left there with the blood pouring from my arm. It was going to be hard to explain this. No one else knew of the werewolves and vampires except for me and my friend. I stood up and ran as quickly as I could back to my house. The vampires would be attracted by the scent of my blood. I finally made it back and called my friend. I told her what happened and she was soon there. I soon lost conscious because of all the blood I lost. I remember I woke up in an ambulance but then I closed my eyes and I drifted unconscious again.
